Blinds, Drapes and Our Budget
When in the market for window coverings it is easy to get overwhelmed by the abundance of product and style options, let alone which are the best choices to keep on budget.
Living in the lower mainland of BC, which is the one of the most expensive places to live in Canada we need to get the best possible value. This is challenging, as the least expensive products will not provide the best long-term value. Spending a bit more will provide the quality, look and function that will hold up over time.
Window Coverings are often one of the last things considered during a renovation or when making the final decisions on décor.
Research your window covering supplier carefully and have an idea what you are comfortable spending. We always recommend that you buy the best window coverings you can afford, rather than on the added features. This is where an experienced designer comes into play. A good retailer will have options for you from different quality suppliers at varying price points.
The type of questions you need to ask your supplier are:
Where are the fabrics and hardware made, and how do these materials compare to the industry “best” materials?
What happens if there is a problem with a window covering? Will the company fix it in my home, take it away for repair or will it have to be replaced? Who repairs it? What is the warranty period?
What is the qualification/experience level of the designer visiting you?
What is the qualification/experience level of the installer? Do they carry insurance, and can provide documentation for their liability insurance and Workers’ Compensation?
Test the operating mechanisms on the sample, and “feel” the fabrics, this will help you with your decision.
We know that custom window coverings are an investment, so it is important that you get the best solution in keeping with your budget. It is not uncommon to install a few coverings and then add additional coverings at later date.
The chart below (figure 1) is intended to provide a general sense of what you could expect in terms of window covering costs and where each product sits in relation to other options. The price will vary between suppliers, covering type, operating mechanism, and difficulty of installation.
When you have been able to determine what will best suit your needs and lifestyle you can then enjoy the results for years to come.
